The development of current technologies is very fast, and we as teachers should be able to follow these developments such as, Internet usage for e-mail, chat, making short videos, and video conferencing. Al-Azhar Islamic Junior High School 10 Kembangan, the school where the writer as English teacher has used CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) in learning English.
Use PowerPoint presentation for students. Microsoft PowerPoint, usually just called PowerPoint, is a proprietary commercial presentation program developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Office suite, and runs on Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS X operating system. The current versions are Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 for Windows and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2011 for Mac.
The use of this software has already become a habit in daily teaching and learning activities - day. They are capable of displaying an interesting power point slides to see and learn that full of useful information or knowledge.
The use of Electronic mail, commonly known as email or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks. Some early email systems required that the author and the recipient both be online at the same time, in common with instant messaging. Today's email systems are based on a store-and-forward model. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages. Neither the users nor their computers are required to be online simultaneously; they need connect only briefly, typically to an email server, for as long as it takes to send or receive messages.
The students are asked to send their recordings in English about describing unforgettable place that they ever went by e-mail. Then in class, the teacher tells the students who have and have not collected the task.
A next thing is making short videos. Video is the technology of electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing a sequence of still images representing scenes in motion. The practical of making video for mini=drama is as follow. The students’ are formed into several groups to make a mini-drama with duration about 10 to 15 minutes. They made preparations such as creating a script, choice of costumes, and the equipment which must be prepared up to the software that will be used for their video editing process. After one month of preparation they submit for assessment speaking skill aspects of the video that spoke in English. They watched a short video together in one class then gave as many comments as they get about the contents of the video, location, pronunciation, fluency, act, and the moral value that can be taken from the video they had watched.
Students could download material of English that they can learn at home. In order to download them, it’s demanding their ability to operate a computer such as, open the school's website and entering their username and password, then they able to download it. All these activities require mastering computer skills or ICT (information Communication and Technology). So the use of CALL or computer assisted language learning has been conducted unconscious and conscious in English languages learning. Almost all programs in computer that use Microsoft products are in English. Beneath it the students already study English unconsciously when they software inside the computer.
